The object itself, a paper parasol, inspired Gwyneth to look at Japanese calligraphy and decorative arts, which have animated brush strokes that contrast with delicate motifs of stylized plants and animals. Her piece is a free interpretive drawing on these themes, speaking of her personal connection with nature and water.
The effect of brush strokes on the parasol's fragile material is combined with flora and fauna motifs related to water. The swirling pattern suggests the movement of water.
