Jenny has chosen to keep the utility green popularly used on rubber rain boots. Against this familiar background, she wanted to introduce the organic forms, decorative colors and motifs of animals traditionally found on Chinese hand-crafted protective spirit shoes and boots for children.
Two donkeys make up the left and right pair of boots. One dashes into the spring rain while the other bends and stretches to burrow its head in foliage. The two complement each other in the theme of renewal and regeneration.
Jenny Wing-Yee Tong is an artist and art educator who teaches at the Varley Art Gallery in Markham. She graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design, majoring in drawing and painting. While at OCAD, Jenny completed a studio year in Florence Italy.
